Good Discipline for 5 Year Olds

The importance of good discipline for 5 year olds can never be overstated. It’s actually a pretty simple concept.

All discipline is based on teaching the child to do what you tell them to do.

Discipline also includes rewarding good behavior and punishing bad behavior, especially when done in front of other people like your peers.

Parents need to remember that good discipline for 5 year olds will not necessarily mean shouting and yelling at them every time they do something wrong.

In fact, often times the opposite is true. It’s not always a good idea to get upset or verbally abuse your child.

In fact, many experts believe that physically punishing your child is one of the most effective methods for disciplining him or her. Below are a few tips on how to discipline your child:

  • Make good decisions with your own time and money. This means that you have to set aside some time each day to supervise your child and make sure that he or she is doing the things that you say that they should be doing. Good discipline for 5 year olds means that you have to use your common sense and good judgment about what your child should be doing.
  • Give rewards and consequences for good behavior. Everyone knows that kids love to receive “pleasure” in return for doing things right. When you’re giving out rewards and consequences, make sure that they fit the behavior that you want to see. For example, if you tell your child that his or her clothes are too small, you might want to consider a trip to the store before he or she decides to take off the shirt. Rewards and consequences also work great when dealing with smaller behaviors, such as leaving the table without cleaning up their spilled drinks.
  • Consistency is the key to discipline. A child needs to know what is expected of him or her. Parents shouldn’t be consistent in what their expectations are either. However, parents can be more consistent than their child by sticking to your rules and doing them consistently. This is a form of good discipline for 5 year olds because it teaches the child that things are correct and that he or she has to do them in a certain way.
  • Don’t make your child feel like they are being held down by the rules. If you have a rule that says that your child must eat foods that are served on a certain table or that your child must wear certain clothing sets, make sure that you enforce it. Your child doesn’t want to be told that she has to do something, even if she doesn’t want to. This will only teach the child that doing what you say is the right thing to do, which can make him or her do things that they would not otherwise do.
  • Be fair. Everyone deserves a chance to do what they want to do. Don’t make your child feel like he or she is just a number. Make him or her feel like a person by giving them choices in things that they can do, instead of just saying that you will take them if they do. This is also a form of good discipline for 5 year olds as they will start to see that other people can actually help them make decisions, instead of just saying that they are going to do it. Also, this builds trust as you can show the child that they can talk to you before making decisions.
  • Try new things. The best way to discipline your child is to find out what they enjoy and let them do whatever they want with that as long as it’s not bad. For some kids, playing musical chairs may be a good discipline for 5 year olds because they love music, but if you put it to good use, they will learn that it is bad to sit still and that they should move around. Introduce new things into their life every once in a while to keep them wanting to do good and develop good discipline habits.
