When you lose your job, you can’t just sit back and wait for the check to come in the mail. The first thing you need to do is go through all of your financial records. This means looking up every account that you have with the company, and also looking up any loans or other outstanding payments you may have. In some cases, you will not be able to get this type of information without an attorney. If there are child support payments due, and you don’t have any records of them, you are going to have a difficult time trying to get the money from your ex.
If you have children, or if your ex has any children, it may be difficult for you to get any of this information. Especially if your ex was the primary caregiver, and then you just lost your job. If you have a history of child support payment dispute, or arrears, it could be difficult for you to get these types of things resolved. Usually, they will need to be paid up front, or else the court will make arrangements for you to pay the amounts owed for your children.
Now that you have lost your job, and you are concerned about child support, or arrears in child care, you need to figure out how you are going to handle those things. The best way to handle it is to find out how much income you have, and how much is right in your bank account. The benefit of doing this is that you will know right away whether you are going to qualify for food stamps, WIC, or Medicaid. You will also want to get copies of any tax returns you may have. You can usually get them for free at your local bank.
Another thing that you need to do, before you can determine how much in child care you are going to be able to afford, is go online and find out what the federal poverty guidelines are. They are set forth by the federal government, and they are used to help determine what the amount of assistance you can receive. The federal poverty guidelines are also used when it comes to child care and support. If you fall under one of these guidelines, you will be better prepared to ask for child care assistance from the state, county, or local government.
If you do fall under one of the federal poverty guidelines, you will need to fill out an application for food assistance. This application can normally be downloaded from the county office where you applied for unemployment, but it is a good idea to print out the application and bring it with you when you drop off your resume at the job application center. At this point, you will also need to inquire as to how many days you will have to apply for food assistance. Usually, you will have around 3 days to apply for food assistance.
If you happen to have job-related injuries that have resulted in a loss of a job, you may qualify for unemployment insurance benefits in addition to food assistance. To determine whether you qualify for unemployment insurance benefits, you will need to visit your local unemployment office. Again, you should know how many days you will have to apply for this additional food assistance before applying for unemployment insurance.
You should also know how to apply for child care assistance. When applying for child care assistance, you will again need to fill out an application and bring it with you when you drop off your application to the county office. Child care assistance is only available to families who meet certain income requirements. Once again, I know that I am not putting this in to light, but it is just a reality and it does happen.
I just recently completed graduate school and I can’t express how thankful I am for all the help Q.I. has provided for me over the years. My daughter is now able to enjoy her extra time at home with me while we work hard to get by. Thank you to the many organizations and agencies that continue to help those who are in need.
